  • Buyer and seller communication happens off-platform.
  • No data on which inventory actually converts.

Deep dive

AI software for marketplaces & ecommerce: how we approach it

Marketplaces are hard because you are building two products at once, one for supply and one for demand, and neither is worth much without the other. The technology has to make listing effortless, discovery accurate and transactions trustworthy, all before liquidity exists to justify the effort.

Solving the cold start with better listing

Supply side friction kills more marketplaces than demand side marketing ever does. If listing an item takes ten minutes, most sellers will not do it twice. We use AI to collapse that: photographs produce draft titles, descriptions, categories and attributes, condition is assessed from images, and pricing guidance comes from comparable historical sales. Listing time drops from minutes to seconds, and catalogue quality improves at the same time.

Consistent, structured listings also feed everything downstream. Search, filtering, recommendation and fraud detection all depend on attributes being present and comparable, which is exactly what manual listing fails to deliver.

Discovery, trust and transactions

Buyers convert when search understands intent rather than matching keywords. Semantic search, sensible filters and recommendations built from behaviour rather than category tags all lift conversion measurably. Trust comes from verification, reviews, dispute handling and clear protection, and the transaction layer needs escrow, split payments, fees, refunds and payouts working precisely.

Fraud and abuse detection has to be present before you need it, monitoring listing patterns, account behaviour and transaction anomalies. Retrofitting it after an incident is expensive and reputationally late.

Growing the network

Once the core works, growth is an operating discipline: seller onboarding and activation, buyer retention, category expansion and pricing of fees against liquidity. We instrument all of it, because marketplace decisions are far too interdependent to make on intuition.

The commercial engineering behind this is the same AI software development approach we apply everywhere, which is why a marketplace that a traditional firm would quote a year for typically reaches a working, transacting version one in a small number of weeks.

How the engagement runs

  1. 1

    Pick the constrained side

We identify whether supply or demand is the bottleneck and design version one around removing that friction.

  2. 2

    Ship a transacting v1

Listing, discovery, payments and trust go live together, because a marketplace without transactions teaches you nothing.

  3. 3

    Instrument and expand

Liquidity, activation and repeat rate drive the roadmap, with categories added on evidence.
