Generative engine optimisation: getting cited in AI answers

July 15, 2026 7 min readSwitchpoint Software Design

Search now has two winners' circles. Ranking is only half the job, the other half is being the source an AI assistant quotes.

Informational clicks are being absorbed

For many queries the assistant resolves the question in-line, and the traffic that used to arrive from position three never happens. That is not the end of organic acquisition, it is a change in what wins it.

What earns a citation

Getting cited depends on things that classic SEO treated as secondary: unambiguous entity definition, structured data that machines can trust, answer-shaped content, and consistency across every page that mentions the same fact. Assistants prefer sources that are easy to verify.

The second lever is coverage

High-intent long-tail phrases are still winnable, but only at a page volume that manual content production cannot reach economically. Programmatic generation, gated on real data, real offers and real intent, solves the volume problem without publishing thin pages.

Measure both circles

Rank movement alone will understate performance; citation monitoring alongside page-level conversion shows what is actually producing pipeline.
